Ministry Opportunities - January 2008

The following list is based on information supplied primarily from CSI affiliates and other organisations. Other opportunities are interpreted by CSI. Some opportunities are limited to CSI leadership, others not. Dates and the nature of the opportunities are subject to change beyond the control of CSI. You must contact the relevant person well in advance and CSI accepts no responsibility for your acceptance for such missions.

Short-Term Missions (subject to change):
  • Bali Youth and Community Centre. Building completed but detailed work continues visitors welcome to come and stay for up to 1 month to experience our work and lend a hand. The youth centre is also recruiting for a full time team manager (minimum of 2 years) who will oversee the pastoral care of our team including both foreigners and nationals.   • Holidays with Purpose: Nias, Indonesia. CS will be running a number of surf trips through the www.holidayswithpurpose.com aid organisation. Be involved in practical serving the local surfing community of Nias and the Hinako Islands whilst surfing off the Indo Jiwa! Contact your national office to see if a team is going from your country.
  • Japan Summer of Mission. September 12-25, 2008. CS Australia aims to go and serve the CS Japan mission in conjunction with US based Walking on Water, this year in Okinawa. Japan is the world’s largest block of unreached surfers and they love foreign visitors! Opportunities for building friendships, assisting with local contests, surf coaching, English teaching.   • Tahiti. May 8-18, 2008. Outreach at the WCT event. CS Tahiti leader Kevin Hemingway needs help for those interested in event outreach and hospitality. Contact Kevin on .
  • Samoa Surf Camp. Christian Surfers have contacts with the Lineup Surf Camp in Western Samoa and an Australian CS leader is staffing the camp. They are always interested in visitors who wish to help out and mix with the visiting surfers and locals.   • Canary Islands. Chris and Elaina Norris have opened up an outreach surf café and surf club in Tenerife and need help manning this. Contact them if you have a heart for hospitality and meeting people -

  • Fiji. May 1-12 and early August, 2008. CSI is helping pioneer a new mission to Fiji. Surf coaching, assistance with judging and competitive surfing at the invitation of the Fijian surfing association. Two missions will be going over in 2008. Contact CS New Zealand leader David Farr on .
  • Costa Rica. A CS community centre has facilitated numerous building and mission trips in Costa Rica. Contact Cal Fisher on for potential future details. Also, CS in Central Florida will be sending a mission team to Dominical, Costa Rica to participate in the Costa Rica Surfing Federation Triple Crown Contest Series. They will help put on the contest, compete if you desire, do outreach ministry on the beach and even work with a local church to help some of the families in the area. There is no limit to the number of people welcomed by this small town, the more the merrier! Date of the trip is June 17–26. Contact Cal Fisher for more info.
  • Ireland Surf School. Here’s an exciting opportunity to teach in the most popular surf school in Ireland, ’Lahinch Surf School’. This school belongs to CS Ireland member and big wave surfer, John McCarthy. John is keen to have instructors that will use this opportunity to be a Christian presence and witness in the community. Prior CS leadership experience would be beneficial. CS Ireland Director, Steve Boal highly recommends this opportunity. So if you’re interested get in touch with John at john@lahinchsurfschool.com.
  • Leadership Exchange Programs to most established mission countries. If you have time and want to develop your surf ministry skills, you can be hosted by a Christian Surfers nation to gain experience in all aspects of our mission.   • Venezuela. May-July 2008. Saturday Surf School and Outreach Surf Contests. Contact CS Venezuela leader Luiz Gutierrez on .

  • Australia ‘Activate’ Junior Leadership Training School. December, 2008. Held annually in the Torquay, Victoria area. Contact Mark Johnston on .
  • Australia Year in the Sun. Gap year program. Based out of the Torquay, Victoria area; a one-year program, theological school qualification, Austudy approved. Contact Lena Johnstone on .

  • PI Indonesia. Special surfer mission trips are provided for islands off Bali with another established mission organization. A sample of things other have experienced on Shemah tours: surfed some of the best surf of their lives; lived and participated in village life; attended and participated in many ceremonies (weddings, paying of dowry, funerals, syukurans, etc); spearfishing, caving and hiking; worked alongside the villagers in community projects; played soccer, volleyball, and badminton with the villagers.
